1. Physiology (body functions).
Your Brain and Nervous System
3 captains on 1 ship
- Your brain consists of 3 parts: your reptilian brain, your limbic brain and your neocortex. Basically, your brain follows your evolution. From your reptilian brain (little intelligence, more on instinct -fight, flee or freeze- as reaction) grew a shell over your first brain: your limbic brain (for emotions, feelings of connection, habits) to then develop a neocortex for more intelligent thinking and planning and self-awareness (see image)
- Stress is a “trigger” to fall back to your lower brain. The connection to your neocortex is then disrupted. Therefore, under great pressure or emotional stress, you often do not react rationally. You fight (angry, defend, blame etc.), flee (withdraw, distance yourself) or freeze (numb behavior, silence etc.).
- Therefore, when experiencing emotions or stress, it can literally be “wise” to take some time to calm down or let someone calm down before you react. You then re-enter your Neocortex and can reason, tune in, deliberate, plan and think calmly.

Regulate!
Some important brain functions
- Your pineal gland is tiny but enormously important! The gland makes melatonin (a brake for your cortisol production during stress, improves immune response, promotes Rem sleep (processing impressions) and cell and DNA repair in your body. In laboratory research, good production of melatonin was found to significantly prolong age!). In addition, the pineal gland seems to work as an “antenna” for inspiration and information from other dimensions (quantum physics) (source: Becomming Supernatural, Dr. Joe Dispenza).
- The hippocampus allows you to mirror new experiences with previous (felt) experiences.
- The amygdala regulates your emotions (not unimportant!) and encodes emotional memories. If unreachable at intense events, the body will store stress as trauma in the body!
- The hypothalamus provides homeostasis (balance) in your Autonomic Nervous System (which runs throughout your body). Action or calm down is the result!
Your autonomic nervous system
- Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) runs from your brain stem throughout your body and connects your (all the organs in your) body to your brain.
- The Nervus Vagus is an important nerve of your ANS. It transmits impulses to your organs and your entire system to:
- With the sympathetic: “accelerate” (action/stress): faster heart rate, faster breathing for oxygen, veins narrowing for faster blood flow, pupils of your eyes wide, sweating, etc.).
- With the Para-sympathetic: “slowing down” (slowing breathing and heart rate, etc.). Important to calm down. But too long deployment causes 'freezing' (numb-down instead of calm-down).
- Actually, you have 4 brains: your brain, and nerve concentrations of your ANS around your heart, intestines and lungs! So it is not so strange that experiences are linked to organs (e.g. sadness to lungs, love to your heart and processing things to your gut (digesting what you have your belly full of!)
- With breathing exercises, conscious movement exercises and 'tapping' (tapping on nerve points) you can influence your Nervus Vagus (switching between sympathetic and para-sympathetic) and come to rest. See, e.g., Irene Lyon. With e.g. ice baths and breathing exercises you can activate your sympathic.
- But realize that ANS regulation is complex and structural change of patterns/neuroplasticity requires long-term regular practice. It is a myth that you can 'just adjust' this. Due to patterns and (traumatic) experiences (from your early childhood) or long-term stress, your ANS can even be developed differently! A viral infection can also cause dysregulation. Earlier use of sympatheticus (gas pedal) and/or deviation dorsal ventral function (relaxed rest) can be the result.
Your brake and gas pedal
Your (sub)consciousness
Consciousness and subconsciousness
- Did you know that 95-99% of your thoughts are subconscious! So what you consciously perceive and think is only 1-5% !!!
So you perceive an enormous amount without realizing it. (e.g. where you put those keys that you now seem to have lost, or the touch of your body on your chair that you now feel when you suddenly pay attention to it). All those perceptions do get processed and largely stored by your brain. - Even things that you “push away” from your consciousness (because you want to forget) remain in your (subconscious) brain.
- Your brain (wave) frequencies vary. An active 'awake' state has fast (beta) waves, but a dream or (deep) sleep state has slow (delta) waves.
- So it is important to realize that there is much more stored than what you now consciously think....
- With e.g. hypnotherapy, meditation or certain music/drum sounds (shamans!) you can lower the brain frequency and from a dream/dreamy state translate images of subconscious memory/thoughts into conscious thoughts. So accessing your subconscious mind exists!
Your endocrine system
Connection between 'glands and body functions'
- Your hypothalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries/testes are important glands. In the picture to the right you can see what they all produce/regulate.
- You can also see in this picture how the Autonomic Nervous System/Nervus Vagus (ANS) has many ramifications precisely to these important glands that sit at the exact location of the 7Qi (Chakras).
- This is where nervous system (electrical waves) release substances into your body through the glands. From immune response to sleep rhythm, heart rate, digestion, weight and reproduction.
- So a connection between these functions and the subtle energy of your Qi (Chakras) makes sense. Amazing though that this classification was already known 1500 BC, when there was no scanning equipment or awareness of all glands and organs. An example: a “gut feeling” = Qi-3 Ego (= beliefs) = connection with digestion (identifying with, or properly processing experiences).
7Qi and your glands
Important 'substances'
- Hormones and neurotransmitters are important 'substances' produced in your glands and nervous system.
- Release of hormones and neurotransmitters can be supported with medication, but also with bodywork (massage, breathing, sound, light, smell and (ayurvedic) herbs. Precisely because of the connection/interplay between your nervous system and your glands!
- In the image to the right (UK) you can see what they all regulate.
- With sufficient sleep, medication, food supplements, but also with bodywork and ANS regulation, you can influence the production of these substances.
- Keep in mind that not all nutritional supplements can be applied just like that or can even be harmful! Look carefully at how they are broken down or the combination effects with medications. An orthomolecular therapist can help you with your specific needs.
Role of neurotransmitters and hormones
Your DNA
Your DNA
- Your DNA contains your genetic instructions that are essential for your development, function, growth and reproduction. DNA thus acts as an inherited blueprint for life.
- DNA expression can change! We call this epigenetic modifications: environmental factors (such as diet, stress (!) or exposure to chemicals can change your gene expression. So you can change your hereditary predisposition (even for diseases)!
- Through mutual influence of all your 7Qi, your DNA can start giving different “commands” to your body. Disease but also recovery can even be influenced at the DNA level. Overall, the effects (on all your 7Qi) of love-based thoughts and behaviors are healthier than fear-based thoughts and behaviors.
Your inherited code can change!
Your Muscles, Skin and Gut
Fascia!
- Fascia is a connective tissue structure that spreads throughout the body, enveloping and connecting organs, muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels.
- Fascia plays an important role in the overall functionality of the body by not only supporting physical structures, but also by transmitting nerve signals and helping to regulate the movement of fluids, such as lymph.
- Thus, this structure is like the figurative "Magic tissue" that also ensures that all structures can move neatly side by side when moving.
- An important discovery is that trauma ('solidified emotions that settle in the body causing the connection between 'mental knowing' (Qi-3/Qi-6) and emotions and feelings (Qi-2/Qi-4) is disconnected, and the energy accumulates in facia (Q-1)).
- Emotions are “the valve” of your system. They allow you to charge and discharge energy. Because you could not express emotions during an intense event, this energy is stored in your fascia, among other things, and trauma occurs.
- It is therefore remarkable that for hundreds of years (especially in Asia) body massage has been used to “release” this energy. In body massage, you move skin/fascia/muscles in relation to each other and cause heat differences.
- In the Western world, too, it is becoming increasingly clear that trauma work in particular consists of a combination of body work and mental work (therapy)!
Relationship between the body and micro organisms
- Your microbiome is the collection of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microbes, found in and on your body. These microorganisms are mainly found in your intestines, but are also found on your skin, in your mouth, airways and other parts of your body. The microbiome plays a crucial role in your health and the proper functioning of your body.
- So your body (Qi-1) interacts directly with external substances/organism.
- This is why healthy food, sufficient water, rest, hygiene (but not excessive sterile living), and connection with nature is so important!
- In India, a whole food philosophy is based on this: Ayurveda, where consistency between needed types of food/herbs and your personality (Vata/Pitta/Kapha) has been seen for many centuries.
- So proper functioning of your gut (your third 'brain') deserves your attention! If in your supermarket you see a small section of 'healthy' foods, ask yourself what those other foods are! Advice is, to eat as little -processed foods- as possible. In other words, everything pure and not processed in a tin or package.
2. Body Qi-1: Energetic meanings/functions.
What is your body?
- A living body being is magical! For 200,000 - 300,000 years Homo Sapiens (humans) have existed. Count a generation as about 25 years and we have already had 10,000 generations. So 10,000 generations knew how to “make” children. And still science, which comparatively of course is still quite young cannot 'build' an independent living body.
- So it takes more than substances and DNA to create a living body. Life energy! A living sperm cell and egg cell fuse, and from a new living being. But how exactly life energy and 'substances' and DNA fuse and lead to a unique new being with its own talents and personality remains a mystery.
- No body (nobody) is the same! What exactly causes DNA expression in infinite variation is unknown. Although the DNA code is becoming more and more clear.
- We do know the 'parts' (physiology), and have known for many centuries that our behavior (nutrition/movement/emotions/thoughts) influences our body development. We now know that some parts of your DNA are active and others are not, and that behavior, thoughts and trauma cause specific changes/abnormalities in your nervous system (neuroplasticity). You can influence this proces (DNA: epigenetics, and nervous system: neuro-plasticity) with behavior and meditation!
- Science describes a body in material form. As a material “bag” of bones, muscles, nervous system, organs, blood, oxygen and other substances. You can study its functioning. Useful because then you can influence it. But that doesn't make it a living being with its own unique appearance! 7Qi therefore looks at the body in a broader sense.
- Allopathic medical science is actually reactive. Symptoms in your body are influenced, modified or suppressed. But your body consists of an enormous number of interrelated processes. The true cause of illness may lie elsewhere. A holistic approach looks at coherence and possible causes.
- You are not your body but you have a body. It is constantly changing! Those who look in the mirror see an ever-changing body over the years. But even daily, yes every second things change in your body. Tissues and substances are replaced. Skin, hear, and even parts of organs. Change is the only constant!
- It changes because of external conditions (environment, temperature, oxygen, etc.) but also because of you! Your own behavior. Which in turn depends on other energy forms within yourself.
- Vedic Texts (Hindu texts from present-day India) from 3,000 years ago described the relationship between body and other chakras (energy centers) as an interrelated system. This roughly corresponds to the 7Qi system (Qi is energy) in which the Chakra system is connected with current scientific understanding. The body is the “carrier” of these energy centers. Or perhaps the body forms itself within these energy centers.
- All your Qi : body parts, emotions, convictions, feelings, mind, soulvoice and spirit/inspiration are connected to your body. They (shape) your body and they emanate from it. Disturbances in your Qi cause bodily effects resulting in deformation, disease or even death.
Examples of Qi Coherence/influence:
- Negative experiences and beliefs: Sad experiences can lead to negative thoughts that take hold as limiting beliefs in the subconscious mind, which can cause harmful behavior patterns such as overeating and trigger a destructive cycle that harms the body.
- Ego protection: The ego may unconsciously create protective mechanisms, such as holding on to weight to prevent further pain or abuse. But being overweight has physical risks.
- Physical performance and pitfalls: In sports, people often strive for peak performance, but ego-driven beliefs (e.g., the pressure to win) can cause injuries and mental blocks.
- Disturbed balance in the body: harmful bacteria, viruses but also negative emotions or beliefs can cause physical imbalance which e.g. disturbs the cell replacement process and defense mechanisms, causing diseases.
- Healing through positive influences: Positive thoughts, inspiration, dietary changes, adequate sleep and herbal remedies can contribute to healing, although medical supervision remains essential.
Mental focus and disease: Focusing on healing rather than finality (of life) can positively influence recovery and disease progression and even length of life. - Mental focus and disease: Focusing on healing rather than finality (of life) can have a positive impact on recovery and disease progression and even length of life.
- Impact of beliefs on health: Shame, guilt, anger and victimization disrupt the body; there is little scientific research on these links but the connection is there!
- Placebo effect and belief systems: More research on the placebo effect and the power of reprogramming belief systems could provide valuable insights and health care savings. A shaman once told me, “It is strange that in your Western world there is not more research on placebo effects. A placebo, the reprogramming of belief systems can be so powerful! And it can bring huge savings in your health care costs in the West!”. Then adding calmly: but here we work with spiritual (inspiration) forces....
- Personally, I think he is right! We research drugs and placebos to look for scientific evidence that a drug works as intended. But perhaps it would be wise to do more research on placebo as such. I would invite “modern” medicine to not just focus on debunking as quackery, but to do more scientific research on the body/mind connections! If it works it works!
3. Body Qi-1: Symbolic meanings/functions.
What are "symbolic" meanings of your body?
Why would you want to know a symbolic meaning? Your subconscious mind often works with images and symbols. A kind of summary of a combination of things, feelings you had with them, or ideas and beliefs you have with them. This "combined" storage makes your brain efficient, but, unpacking of deep stored information can be challenging. Symbols can be 'triggers' for this unpacking. Once a symbol comes to the surface or appears in your consciousness (e.g. during therapy sessions), it can help to clear up confusion, create clarity or bring desires or fears into focus. Or to bring concrete life goals into focus.
I list some commonly used symbolic meanings of Qi1-Body:
Embodiment (matter expression).
First, a body symbolizes something “concrete. Matter or form. But something can also be associated with behavior. E.g. He embodies the idea of a rock in the surf. Or a black bird from the right means bad luck. Or a wall means being locked out or enclosed.
Intimacy
An obvious symbolic meaning is intimacy. Touching or being touched. Warmth or reassurance from a hand on your shoulder. This is different from lust/sex (a negative connotation. That doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy sex of course! Conscious enjoyment can also be a meaning).
Perception and limits
Your body is the boundary between you and your environment. A symbolic meaning of a body for you may also be that you want to limit, or indicate more clearly boundaries.
It can also be a limiting perception of something you cannot actually see. A “ghost” as a visible frightening energy, a color or colored object or substance (metal/wood) as an expression of a feeling.
Safety & Health
Safety can also be symbolically associated with body. Outside your system there is chaos, uncontrollability, or sometimes even danger. Withdrawn into your body, you can feel safe. You know that, you feel that. So seeing or experiencing your body can evoke feelings of safety or security or, for example, health (feeling good).
Home & Finance
Your body is your home. Your enclosure. Your temple or vehicle. So symbolically your body can be related to e.g. how or where you want to live, whether you need less or more (indoor) space, or just being outside. Contact or seclusion.
Money is energy. What matters is what you do with it. Your body is also symbolically a representation of (financial) security. Whether you can provide for yourself. Or whether you are dependent on others. Or, conversely, how much attention you give to a healthy body.
Family/generational support
A final symbolic meaning may be family. You are literally descended from your parental family. Your parents conceived you, but you also feel physically related to your siblings. Or even to other members of your family system.
More spiritually, it can also mean generational support. Support from deceased family members. In your own family tree, but perhaps also from your soul-mates. Your soul-mates.
Any meaning is possible!
The above are common symbolic interpretations of (your or someone else's) body. But it is of course possible that you have very different associations. By definition, that is never “wrong” and just your personal “truth. The point is that Qi-1 Body (physical and energetic) can have meanings for you that can help you.
4. Bodywork - therapy
Working on your body
Maybe you “don't feel good about yourself,” or even sick and suffering from physical complaints. Or maybe you want to grow old in good health for as long as possible. A body is something of many 'balances' (which can be disturbed). Therefore it is important to take good care of your body and to take complaints or illness seriously, and in the latter case to consciously work on healing.
The essence of 7Qi is that all 7Qi interact! So you can work on your body itself but also on your other 6Qi. e.g. even through inspiration (creative therapy) or cognitive therapy or through movement or massage with simultaneous emotional release (crying, shouting etc.) you can promote physical recovery.
Realize that stress is disease and cause of death no. 1! (and many related behaviors unhealthy behaviors such as addiction, “over”-working etc.).
Medical science, influenced by insurers, politics and the profit motive of pharmaceutical companies, focuses more on disease control than on actual healing. And employers could work towards more sustainable working relationships through stress management.
But ultimately you are responsible for your life choices. They can and will affect your health! How much responsibility do you take on your shoulders? Can you set boundaries (or why not?). Do you take suppressive medications or do you actually work on your health?
